Lisa Miller, PhD
Professor of Psychology and Education at Columbia University, Teachers College and is Founder of the Spirituality Mind Body Institute, the first Ivy League graduate program in spirituality and psychology.
Dr. Miller is a foremost scientist on spirituality across the lifespan, with her work published in top research journals including JAMA-Psychiatry, American Journal of Psychiatry, and the Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry. Her innovative research has focused on quantifiable effects of spirituality in health, resilience and thriving, and an overall sacred and joyful life. Her clinical and consultation work focuses on spiritual awareness and spiritual growth, for individuals, families, groups and organizations.
Dr. Miller is the author of “The Spiritual Child; The New Science of Parenting for Health and Lifelong Thriving.” Based upon her decade and a half of experience, she offers talks, workshops and consultations on spirituality in healthy development to parents and schools, adult wellness groups, and private and public organizations. She is the Editor of The Oxford Handbook of Psychology and Spirituality and Co-Editor of the APA journal, Spirituality in Clinical Practice. She has been elected as Fellow by the American Psychological Association, as well as for the Virginia Sexton Mentoring Award of graduate students. A graduate of Yale, she received her doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania from Martin Seligman.
She frequently is cited in print and in on-line media and has appeared on CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, and NBC Today Show as an expert. She lives in Connecticut with her husband and three children.
James D. Adams, PhD
Dr. Adams has published extensively in the field of Pharmacology. The subject of his dissertation at UC San Francisco was ketamine metabolism. He has published on oxidative stress and developed assays for GSH, GSSG as well as the pyridine nucleotides NADPH, NADP, NADH and NAD. In several publications, he elucidated the primary targets of oxygen radicals and showed that DNA is an early and very sensitive target of oxidative stress. Additionally, Dr. Adams has worked on California traditional healing and plant medicines for many years. He was taught for 14 years by a Chumash Indian Healer, and has described the phytochemistry of several California plants.
Christopher Adrian, MD
Dr. Adrian is a palliative care pediatrician on the Comfort and Palliative Care Team at Children's Hospital Los Angeles. He was formerly the Writer-in-Residence at the Program in Narrative Medicine at Columbia University, and is the author of four novels and a book of short stories. His short fiction has appeared in The New Yorker, The Paris Review, and Esquire.
Mike Averill, MBA
Mike Averill is the creator of the concept Cognitive Self Advocacy, a framework based on self-compassion research. Mike has shared this framework as a panelist at USC’s Mind Body Caucus, to incarcerated individuals at California State Prison, and elsewhere. Mike has been a certified breathwork, yoga, and meditation guide since 2015, and holds his MBA, Certificate in Dispute Resolution (Straus Institute), and BA from Pepperdine University. Mike will receive his MSW from University of Southern California in 2021.
Brandon Birckhead, MD
Dr. Birckhead is a project scientist working on VR clinical trials at Cedars-Sinai. He recently completed the Digital Pain Reduction Kit study which assessed the use of virtual reality therapy in those with musculoskeletal injury for 60 days. This will be one of the largest randomized control trials within the VR pain reduction research. He is also the co-director of the Virtual Medicine Conference along with Dr. Brennan Spiegel the founder of the event. One of the largest immersive technology conferences focused specifically on its use in healthcare.
David Black, PhD
Dr. Black’s research focuses on the development and testing of mindfulness-based interventions for disease symptom management among people in drug and alcohol addiction recovery and in cancer survivors. The target mechanistic processes he studies are affect and self-regulation over behavior and links to neuroimmunological activity relevant to disease progression. Dr. Black’s major areas of technical expertise are human subjects clinical trial design and multi-method experimental testing of mindfulness-based interventions on immune cell metrics. Dr. Black founded the American Mindfulness Research Association and have been directing the organizations' research, dissemination, and grant-giving activities for a decade.
Ricky N. Bluthenthal, PhD
Dr. Bluthenthal is the Associate Dean for Social Justice and a Professor in the Department of Preventive Medicine at the Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California. Since 1991, he has conducted community-partnered research on risk behaviors and health promotion among disadvantaged populations.
Wahaj Bokhari
Wahaj is a Master of Social Work Student at the University of Southern California. Her focus of study is in “social change and innovation”. She has a B.S. in Biochemistry as well as an intensive background in integrative wellness and technology. She understands the importance of technology in revolutionizing the social services and is strongly committed to be a data advocate for social good. She founded “www.Goodbydata.com” as an initiative to leverage data storytelling for social good.
Jim Burklo, MDiv, Rev
Reverend Jim Burklo is the Senior Associate Dean of Religious Life at the University of Southern California. He serves as chaplain to students as staff, supports the 85 student religious and spiritual clubs at the University, and leads groups, classes, events and retreats for students and staff. Reverend Burklo received his B.S. in Social Relations from UC Riverside, his M.Div. from San Francisco Theological Seminary, and his ministerial ordination from the United Church of Christ. He teaches a course in the Arts of Service at the USC Keck School of Medicine. For ten years he taught Public Policy at USC’s graduate School of Social Work. Before coming to USC in 2008, he served as a church pastor, campus minister at Stanford, and organizer and executive director of a homeless services agency in northern California. He now serves on the board of directors of Progressive Christians Uniting and is the author of seven books: his latest, Tenderly Calling: An Invitation to the Way of Jesus, will be published in early 2021.
Rael Cahn, MD, PhD
Dr. Rael Cahn completed his PhD in Neurosciences in 2007 and received his medical degree in 2008 from UC San Diego in La Jolla, CA. He completed his residency with the UC Irvine Medical Center Psychiatry Residency Program in 2014 and joined the USC faculty. Dr. Cahn has been researching and publishing on the clinical and brain effects of mindfulness and meditative practices throughout his medical and scientific career as well as teaching mindfulness meditation in group settings for medical professionals as well as patients. He is currently affiliated with the USC Brain and Creativity Institute where he is conducting psychological and brain research in the domains of behavioral and psychological interventions including mindfulness and meditative practices in healthy populations dealing with everyday stressors as well as those with psychiatric illness including substance use disorders, depression, and anxiety.
May Che, Certified Yoga Therapist
May is a certified yoga therapist and spent over 15 years practicing and teaching yoga with an integrative and therapeutic approach. She’s dedicated to working with diverse populations with various complex medical conditions and needs. Her experience spans across a variety of settings including rehabilitation centers, doctor’s offices, health conferences, corporate wellness seminars, and non-profit community centers.

Elise Marie Collins, MA
Elise Marie Collins is a yoga instructor, health coach, and author with a master's in gerontology from USC. Her mission is to transform how Americans age and her book Super Ager is an Amazon bestseller. Elise also co-wrote a chapter on centenarians for a geriatric medical textbook published in June.
James Collins, PhD
Dr. Collins is Senior Lecturer in the Department of Classics and Ancient History at the University of Sydney and Associate for Civic and Philosophical Engagement at the Center for Hellenic Studies in Washington, D.C. His research focuses on the pragmatics of intellectual life in antiquity. He is director of the interdisciplinary Performing Wisdom program.
Ziva Cooper, PhD
Dr. Ziva Cooper is the Director of the UCLA Cannabis Research Initiative in the Jane and Terry Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior and Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry. Her research involves understanding variables that influence both the therapeutic potential and adverse effects of cannabis and cannabinoids through double-blind, placebo-controlled studies.
Rebecca Cunningham, OTD, OTR/L, MSCS
Rebecca received her master’s in occupational therapy and clinical doctorate of occupational therapy at the University of Southern California. As a clinical faculty member at the USC Occupational Therapy Faculty Practice, Dr. Cunningham works with clients to improve the self-management of chronic conditions, including Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease, epilepsy, and other functional neurological conditions. She is a member of the USC Multiple Sclerosis multidisciplinary team, serves on the National MS Society Healthcare Provider Council for the southern California chapter, and carries the MS Certified Specialist designation.
Tobi Fishel, PhD
Dr. Fishel is an integrative clinical and health psychologist and the GME Director of Residency Wellness for LAC+USC and Keck Medical Center at the University of Southern California. She is the former co-founder and Director of the Osher Center for Integrative Medicine at Vanderbilt Medical School. She also co-developed the Distressed Physician Course at Vanderbilt University which incorporates emotional intelligence, narrative medicine and mindfulness. Currently, in addition to responsibilities in the GME office, she teaches a trauma psychotherapy course in the School of Social Work at USC, is a consultant for integrative health centers and the VA system, and has a unique clinical practice for individuals and families struggling with trauma and chronic illness where she incorporates self-compassion, creative arts, mindfulness, movement, depth psychology, spirituality, body-centered practices and the healing medicine of community, music, and the natural world. The guiding principles in her work are authenticity, meaning, and connection and she encourages a deepening relationship with the innate gifts of one’s own soul.
Jeffrey I. Gold, PhD
Dr. Gold is the Co-Founder of the USC IIHW, Professor in the Departments of Anesthesiology, Pediatrics, and Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at the Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California, Director Emeritus and Director of the Pediatric Pain Management Clinic at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA), and the Chair for the Institutional Review Board (IRB) at the Saban Research Institute at CHLA.
Bonni Goldstein, MD
Dr. Goldstein is the Medical Director of Canna-Centers Wellness and Education, a California-based medical practice devoted to educating patients about the use of cannabis for serious and chronic medical conditions. After years of working in the specialty of Pediatric Emergency medicine, she developed an interest in the science of medical cannabis after witnessing its beneficial effects in an ill friend. Since then she has evaluated thousands of patients for use of medical cannabis. She has a special interest in treating children with intractable epilepsy, autism, cancer and other conditions. Dr. Goldstein’s book Cannabis is Medicine (Little, Brown Spark) will be published September 2020.
Matthew S. Goodman, PhD
Dr. Goodman is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Keck School of Medicine of USC. His clinical and research work lies at the intersection of mental and physical health. Dr. Goodman is Director of the documentary film, “On the Path: Meditation, Spirituality, and the Dark Night of the Soul,” which explores the difficulties associated with meditation and spiritual practice. He is Board certified in biofeedback.
Kate Gottlieb, MHE, CHES, CWWPM
Kate has a Bachelor’s degree in Public Health from Central Washington University and a Masters degree in Health Education from Idaho State University. Throughout Kate’s professional journey she has obtained certifications in health education, worksite wellness, and health coaching. Kate began her career in sustainability at Virginia Mason Memorial hospital, where she researched and implemented best practices for hospital operations resulting in significant financial and resource savings. Kate’s passion is to improve environments to support positive behavior changes. Kate is currently a Member Engagement Manager at Practice Greenhealth, and resides in Yakima, WA with her husband and son.
Diane Gromala, PhD
Dr. Gromala is a Distinguished Professor at Simon Fraser University. A pioneer in VR for chronic pain, Dr. Gromala innovates how patients and clinicians co-design the integrated VR systems she builds and continuously tests. Currently, Gromala is working with United Healthcare Group deploying her VR interventions in clinical-to-home domains.
Ronan Hallowell, EdD, MA
Dr. Hallowell is assistant professor of clinical medical education at the Keck School of Medicine of USC (KSOM). He is a learning scientist and educational designer in the MD program. Ronan is a founding faculty member of KSOM's new MS program in Narrative Medicine.
Marguerite Weston Heery, MBBS, FRACP, BA
Dr. Heery has been as a consultant thoracic physician at St Vincents, a Sydney teaching hospital. This also involved medical student teaching. Since retirement I have pursued an interest in the humanities that has led to candidature for a PhD in Ancient History, the topic being the legacy of Hippocrates to medicine today
Sara Ivanhoe, MA
Sara Ivanhoe, M.A has been teaching yoga since 1995 and served as the Yoga Spokesperson for “Weight Watchers,” “Yoga for Dummies,” and “Crunch Yoga.” She was also the yoga columnist for Health Magazine and has written and appeared in almost every western yoga and health publication. Currently, Ivanhoe serves as the Yoga and Meditation Content Curator for Glo, lectures on Yoga Studies and Sleep at LMU and USC, and presents at corporations and conferences internationally.

Charles Kaplan, PhD
Dr. Kaplan is currently Interim Associate Dean of Research in the University of Southern California Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work. His path can only be described as multidisciplinary and can be traced back to his undergraduate days as a political science major at Tulane University. Drawn to the social upheaval occurring in 1960s California, he headed to UCLA to earn a master’s degree and doctorate in sociology. During his time at UCLA, he received training in biomedical research through the National Institute of General Medical Science. Due to his previous sociological experience and interest in drug addiction, he quickly gained traction studying the patterns and spread of illicit substance use. He continues to work on cannabis policy-related research in the U.S. and Europe related to the benefits and risks associated with cannabis.
Tveen Kirkpatrick, RN, BFin, BSN, CCRN
Tveen is an RN at Keck Medical Center of USC. She spent several years on the Steering Committee of the USC Institute of Integrative Health. At which time led the implementation of an Aromatherapy and Guided Imagery program for inpatients. Tveen completed a program on Integrative Health at the University of Arizona and is a Healing Touch practitioner.
Monika Kobylecka, LAc, MS
Monika is a licensed acupuncturist practicing Kiiko Matsumoto Style (KMS) acupuncture at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA). Her passion for acupuncture, facilitated by this form of Japanese acupuncture, translates into an ongoing effort to bridge the gap between Eastern and Western medicine in a practical and patient-focused manner.

Brian O'Rouke, MDiv, Rev
As chaplain at MonteCedro Rev O’Rouke responsible for the pastoral care of over 200 residents (Including a 20 bed memory unit) and 100 staff. His focus is supporting residents and their families through the dying process and at the time of death. This includes hospital visits and funerals/memorials. He offers two weekly services, one for independent residents and one for residents with dementia. Rev O’Rouke oversees the By Your Side Program, an end of life vigil companion program. In addition, he leads regular grief and caregiver support groups as well as a weekly Bible study.
Marisa Perdomo, PT, DPT
Marisa is a Board Certified Oncology Physical Therapy Specialist and an Assistant Professor in Clinical Physical Therapy at the University of Southern California. She has over 35 years of clinical practice focusing on orthopedic, oncologic, lymphatic dysfunctions and integrated health. She received her Master's and Clinical Doctorate degrees at the University of Southern California where she developed a physical therapy practice for cancer survivors at the USC Faculty Practice. As a survivor of cancer herself, Marisa understands the necessity and power of integrating mind-body therapies along with traditional physical therapy interventions in order to facilitate healing of the body and spirit. She also serves on the steering committee for the USC Institute for Integrated Health and Wellness and has developed yoga based physical therapy interventions for individuals recovering from cancer.
Daniele Piomelli, PhD
Dr. Piomelli is Distinguished Professor of Anatomy and Neurobiology and Louise Turner Arnold Chair in Neurosciences at the University of California, Irvine. He is co-director of UCI’s Center for the Study of Cannabis and Editor-in-Chief of Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research, the only peer-reviewed journal dedicated to the study of cannabis, its derivatives, and their endogenous counterparts in the human body.

Albert “Skip” Rizzo, PhD
Skip Rizzo is the Director of MedVR at the USC Institute for Creative Technologies and conducts research on the design, development and evaluation of VR systems across the domains of psychological, cognitive and motor functioning in healthy and clinical populations.

Stacy Rosenthal, RN, PHN
Stacy Rosenthal is currently an RN Quality Coordinator at Kaiser Permanente. She has spent her lifetime providing comfort and care to those around her through massage and energy work! Her expertise in holistic care afforded her the opportunity to build the Integrative Health and Healing Department at the Greater Los Angeles Veterans Administration Medical Center which included integration of holistic care bedside and in the outpatient arenas. Stacy has certifications in Massage Therapy, Healing Touch, Reiki, Aromatherapy, Bio-feedback, and Therapeutic Drumming all of which she has incorporated into her Nursing Career.
Lorne Schussel, PhD, MS
Dr. Schussel is a Postdoctoral Fellow and Research Director of the Contemplative Science and Post Materialism Lab in Clinical Psychology Department at Columbia University, Teachers College. He is visiting faculty at the Spirituality Mind Body Institute and formerly Project Director of the Contemplative Neuroscience and Connectivity Project. His research focuses on the utilization of contemplative practices, human connectivity, contemplative neuroscience, EEG hyperscanning, and integrating clinical biomarkers (epigenetic, HR, EEG) into research.
Randye J. Semple, PhD
Randye J. Semple, PhD is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Keck School of Medicine of USC. Her research and clinical interests focus on the development and evaluation of mindfulness-based interventions with youth. Her latest book, The Mindfulness Matters Program for Children and Adolescents (Guilford, 2019) is a flexible guide for teachers, clinicians, and parents. Dr. Semple serves on the steering committees for Mindful USC and the USC Center for Mindfulness Science, and on the research committee of the American Mindfulness Research Association.
Andrew Shubov, MD
Dr. Andrew Shubov is the director of the inpatient East-West medicine consult service at UCLA Medical Center, Santa Monica. This is a full time Integrative Medicine consultation service that provides acupuncture, trigger point injections and traditional Chinese medicine diagnostic and treatment strategies to critically ill hospitalized patients, as well as a holistic understanding for patients to better understand their disease process within a more empowered narrative.
Bob Solomon, JD
Bob Solomon has been practicing law since 1972. He was a Clinical Professor of Law at Yale Law School from 1985-2011, when he joined the faculty at UC Irvine School of Law, as the co-director of the Community and Economic Development Clinic. Along with Professor Daniele Piomelli, he is the co-director of UCI’s Center for the Study of Cannabis.
Varun Soni, JD, MTS, MA
Varun Soni is the Dean of Religious Life at the University of Southern California. Dean Soni received his B.A. degree in Religion from Tufts University, where he also earned an Asian Studies minor and completed the Program in Peace and Justice Studies. He subsequently received his M.T.S. degree from Harvard Divinity School and his M.A. degree through the Department of Religious Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He went on to receive his J.D. degree from University of California, Los Angeles School of Law, where he also completed the Critical Race Studies Program and served as an editor for the Journal of Islamic and Near Eastern Law. He earned his Ph.D. through the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Cape Town, where his doctoral research focused on religion and popular culture. As an undergraduate student, Dean Soni spent a semester living in a Buddhist monastery in Bodh Gaya, India through Antioch University’s Buddhist Studies Program. As a graduate student, he spent months doing field research in South Asia through UCSB’s Center for Sikh and Punjab Studies.
Zachary Steel, BA
Zachary Steel is an Assistant Professor of Theatre Practice, Head of Comedy, and Director of the Medical Clown Program at The School of Dramatic Arts. His focus in research and practice is to bring the power of theatre and performance out of the traditional confines of the theatre building and into places of healing to those who need it most.
Richard Wallace
Richard Wallace is an artist, organizer and the founder of Equity and Trans-formation (EAT). His work focuses on organizing black informal workers to confront anti-black racism in the US and abroad. He is also the founder of the Roosevelt University’s student chapter of the Stop Mass Incarceration Net-work, the Founder of The Future of Benin Program in west Africa, one of the inaugural AFRE Fellows, a Voqal alum and was recently selected as Soros Justice Fellow.
Marc Weigensberg, MD
Marc J. Weigensberg, MD, is an holistic pediatric endocrinologist specializing in the mind-body treatment of youth with diabetes and other chronic health conditions. He is the Director of Pediatric Endocrinology at LA County+USC Medical Center, and former Director of the USC Institute for Integrative Health & Wellness. He is certified in the mind-body modality of Interactive Guided ImagerySM, which he uses to help his patients reduce stress, improve lifestyle behaviors, and promote a state of wholeness and well-being. His extensive activity in integrative biomedical research has utilized guided imagery, along with other integrative modalities such as narrative medicine, indigenous group processes, poetry, music and storytelling, to treat diabetes and reduce metabolic disease risk in children, adolescents, and young adults. He practices a collaborative, whole person approach to health which incorporates attention to body, emotion, mind, and spirit in seeking true and complete healing.
Allen Weiss, PhD
Dr. Weiss is a Professor of Marketing in the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California where his research has specialized on decisions in high-technology markets and interorganizational relationships. Allen is also a teacher of mindfulness at InsightLA.org and was promoted to be a senior teacher there in 2014 by Jack Kornfield (one of the most eminent teachers of mindfulness in the world). As a teacher of mindfulness, he has taught mindfulness companies and teams through Insight4Peace.com. He is also currently the Director of Mindful USC which brings mindfulness to the University of Southern California. In this role, which is a service of the Provost’s Office, he guides the teaching of mindfulness throughout the university and has taught mindfulness to physicians and surgeons in the various hospitals, including Children’s Hospital, the Keck School of Medicine and the Los Angeles County Hospital. On the USC main campus, he has taught mindfulness to a wide variety of groups, including veterans, incoming freshman, undergraduate and graduate students, administrators, staff leadership, and faculty in virtually every department on campus. He also works with the Chief Diversity Officers in the various schools at USC to bridge mindfulness with diversity and inclusion. Before joining USC, Dr. Weiss was a faculty member at Stanford University and a professional musician. He has a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from UCSB, an M.A. in Education from Ohio State University and an MBA from the University of Kansas.
Erika Wright, PhD
Erika Wright holds a PhD in English from USC. She teaches in the English Department and is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Medical Education at USC Keck School of Medicine and Associate Director of the HEAL Program and the Narrative Medicine Master of Science Program. She has published on literature and medicine and the health humanities.

Ryan Ziltzer is a 3rd year medical student at Keck School of Medicine, and he’s also a medical clown! Ryan believes medical clowning helps address the social and emotional needs of hospital patients. Whether it’s listening to their heart or playing them a song, Ryan wants patients to heal in body and spirit.
